Bargain Shopping Strategies

Now that the official day of Christmas is past, another tradition for many is here…After Christmas Shopping! But like anything, one can go overboard. When my husband gets worried that I may clearance shopping a bit excessively, all he has to do is say Dog Food and quickly, I am back to reality. Why dog food? 3 years ago, I purchased about 15 cans of dog food because they were free. Fine, except we don’t have a dog. (Yes, I did donate the food to my local shelter). And unless I get/can do a good deed for FREE, I don’t anymore.
So here are some common sense guidelines while getting that Bargain Shopper’s Rush (and shopping in general).
Bargain Shopping Huntress Rules
1. Budget a set dollar amount that is your spending total. This may sound too simple, but it never is a good idea to go shopping with money you already have spent on fixed budget items, including house payment, car payment, or grocery food funds. Also, do not use credit cards to pay for clearance items. It never makes sense to acquire debt and pay interest on money saving items. Once you know how much to spend, you are literally free to have fun.
2. Have a list or outline of items you are interested in purchasing. If you want to replace your Christmas tree, for example, write it down or you can easily forget to buy that tree when you find Bath Sets for $1.49 each, instead.
3. Include upcoming holidays and family/friends’ birthdays on your list. My Mom’s birthday is in March, and I know that she like “”Ghirardelli” chocolates. In past years, Target has had this candy included in its Christmas clearance. So I will wait till Target's Holiday clearance is 75% or 90% off , so I am paying as little as $ .29 each for a few bags of Mom’s favorite candy.
4. Don’t promise others that you will shop for them. (This may make some upset, but I strongly believe that your time and resources are too valuable! ) Remember you are the one taking the time to hit the sales, hunt out the bargains and invest YOUR funds. Don’t lend your budgeted money for someone else., and please don’t rationalize or be guilted into doing this. (What if your friend changes her mind, too?)
5. Allot a window of time usage for clearance items. If I am not going to be using something, giving sale item as a gift or a child will not be wearing clothes within 6 months, I do NOT buy it. Of course, there is the exception of Holiday decorations.
6. Be honest with yourself. This can be the hardest, but the most important strategy to follow. I can rationalize ANYTHING. Take the dog food for example, I needed it because I told myself that we were discussing getting a new family pet. Problem? You bet! My son and I are allergic to dogs, But did I justify to myself to buy the cans of food? Sure did and I bet you can, too.
7. Be honest with others. This has potential to be the hardest rule of the all. If you cannot look your partner in the eyes after shopping or you find yourself forgetting to mention how much you spent, you have a problem. Simply follow the above guidelines and your spouse or significant other will be proud and in awe of your shopping prowess. Beats hiding receipts, bags and packages. Dishonesty is not worth any shoppers’ high. (and I’ll leave it at that)

Olay offers a $15 rebate when you buy 2 Olay Regenerist products. Get the rebate form here. Offer valid from 12/23/09-1/24/10. Must be postmarked by 2/5/10. Some of the Regenerist products are $20 apiece, but they have some facial cleansers for around $8 apiece. They are sold at the major retailers (Walmart, Walgreens, Target, Rite Aid). There was a coupon in the 11/29 newspaper for $3 off 1 Olay Regenerist Facial Moisturizer or Facial Cleanser (excludes trial size) that can also be used (expires 12/31). When you send in rebates, they reimburse you on the original price of the product not the price you paid after coupons.

There will not be any coupons this the paper this Sunday due to the holidays. However, there is a chance of Albertsons having Doublers in the paper. But, I don't know if it is worth the risk if Albertsons does not have any in their ad. So, I am going to put a hold on my paper for the weekend.
If you are thinking about starting to get the paper, I would wait until the first week of January. Next Sunday, December 27th, there will only be one coupon insert, Procter & Gamble, which only has non-food coupons (Crest, Pantene, Olay, etc.).

They are called "Twice the Value Coupons" or "Doublers." Each Twice the Value Coupon will double the value of a manufacturer's coupon, up to $1. (If the manufacturer's coupon says Do Not Double on it, Albertsons will not double it.) Using these Doublers with your manufacturer's coupons in conjunction with their sale prices can result in 75%-95% savings. The catch is that you can only double up to 3 coupons per transaction. If you want to double more coupons than that, they must be done in separate transactions. Depending on the store, you can do 1-3 transactions at a time before you drop the groceries off in your car and come back in the store.

When they are issued, they are usually located in the Sunday or Wednesday ad, and you can get copies of the ad at the Customer Service counter if you don't get the newspaper or just want more Doublers. They will usually only give you 1 ad per store visit.

MyPoints.com
MyPoints is a website that gets paid by companies when they generate traffic on their website. MyPoints then passes on some of that money to those people that visit the website by giving them points for the websites they visit, which can be redeemed for gift certificates.
Generally, each website you visit generates 5 points, and a $25 gift certificate can be redeemed for around 3,500 points. It takes about 6 months to get that many points, but the time is well spent. You know which websites to visit from e-mails that are sent to you (it is wise use a separate e-mail address than your main one). I get anywhere from 2 to 10 e-mails per day.
Along with getting points for just visiting a website, you can also get points for shopping online through the links on their website and by filling out surveys. I don't to a lot of shopping through their links because fatwallet.com and bing.com offer better discounts for shopping through their websites, but I do fill out a lot of surveys to get points. Just for attempting to qualify for a survey, you get 10 points. Then if you qualify to fill out the survey, you get 50-75 points. The surveys I have filled out range from asking about marketing campaigns for new products, to where I eat out and why, to what I like about my car insurance.

A lot of times an e-mail will say that you get 5 points for visiting a website and 25 points for registering with them. However, most of those sites will sell your information to third parties. I usually get the points for visiting the website, but don't register to get the extra points.
- If you are shopping online, check to see if they offer points for linking to that website through MyPoints. Sometimes they offer points when other cash back websites do not.

I priced the lotion at Walgreens and Walmart online to see what the prices would be like in the store. Walgreens has the 20.2 oz for $9.99 (I did a search and it is available at all the stores in the Boise/Meridian area) and Walmart has the 11.8 oz for $5 (they may have more, this is just all that was listed online).

The coupons vary from region to region, but this gives us a good idea of the coupons that will be available. New Coupons on Coupon Bar
Coupons.com added more Internet Printables to the Coupon Bar (on the right side of the page) and on coupons.com. They added a bunch of Kelloggs cereal coupons and a coupon for $1 off 2 Nestle Jingles (candy in the shape of bells). The Kelloggs coupons will only let you print them once, but any other coupons you can print twice by hitting the back button and refreshing the page after the first copy prints. Internet Coupons are free to print and are accepted at the major retailers (Walmart, WinCo, Albertsons, Fred Meyer, Target, Walgreens, etc.). They can be printed in black and white or in color.

Albertsons Doubler Catalina
UPDATE: The comments on quite of few of the blogs indicate that this is the way the Doublers will be given out in the future, and that they will not be in the Sunday paper anymore. I hope this is not the case, but I will post more when I find more information about it. Also, the $25 threshold that must be met in order for the Doublers to print out, cannot include Dairy. I don't know if this is just milk or all dairy. So, keep that in mind when you are shopping.

Albertsons customers have another great holiday savings opportunity with the “Double Delight, Twice the Value Savings” Catalina Coupons from December 9 through December 13!!
Details:
•Purchase $25 of groceries (normal exclusions apply) receive 3 Catalina coupons that will double the value of any Manufacturer Coupon in a future shopping trip.
•Coupons begin printing on Wednesday, December 9 between 4 and 8 p.m.
•Coupons stop printing on Sunday, December 13 at 11:59 p.m.
•All coupons must be redeemed by the end of the day on Tuesday, December 15
